This summer one of my goals was to get into the ocean and get on a Stand Up Paddle board! I had been eying this sport for a few weeks on my beach runs and it looked like the perfect combination of fitness and fun! As it turns out, The Beach Cities Blue Zones Project gave me the chance to try SUP from Olympus SUP Fit, and not only did we do stand-up paddle boarding, we did YOGA on SUPs. What a blast!
Ready Set Yo!
Michelle, our fantastic instructor, started us off on dry land so we could understand the arm movement, how to stand to maintain balance and how to maneuver. Then she took us newbies onto the water.
Getting on the board the first time and standing in the middle of the ocean was an amazing rush. I felt strong, balanced and one with nature. Did I mention my first SUP experience was during sunset? Well, I was immediately hooked! It’s so fun, challenging and such a good workout, I want you to try it too!
My second SUP experience was this past Saturday and it was filled with fun new experiences. It was a perfect morning, the sun was shining and the water was calm. Yoga bliss. We had Brittany the creator of Pure SUP yoga boards teaching our class so we got to use her beautiful, eco friendly boards.
We did the yoga “chair” pose while paddling to warm up, and once we were warmed up and in position, the workout began. We moved through the yoga poses and challenged our balance with every movement. Picture this, we were in down dog pose looking across the ocean and seeing the blue sky above. I am often asked “how can I work my abs?” Guess what, this has to be one of the most fun ways to get in a core workout.
Balancing becomes more fluid and natural each time you get on the board so I enjoyed this class even more than my first. SUP Yoga is challenging and you can fall in the water but that’s part of the fun.
After an amazing liquid yoga class we had time to do some more paddling, this time in the open ocean. It was a whole new experience for me but I found my balance through waves and felt comfortable paddling in the open ocean.
At Beach Physique Fitness we encourage our clients to find fun fit activities to stay active. This one is on top of the list. I’m so crazy about it that I plan to meet my friend Courtney, owner of Healthy Makeovers, weekly for class. Since it’s summertime, I highly recommend you try SUP Yoga. This is the time of year to enjoy the ocean, some sun and get fit for life!
